RxHUB and Patient Safety Institute Partner to Improve Patient Care, Promote Electronic Prescribing

Alliance Will Accelerate Patient Safety and National Connectivity Programs to Create Greater Access to Information and Improve Health Care Delivery PLANO, Texas and ST. PAUL, Minn., November 18, 2002-The Patient Safety Institute (PSI), and RxHub, both leaders in patient information, safety and health care connectivity, announced today an agreement to work together to increase nationwide adoption of RxHub’s electronic information exchange (RxHub System) and PSI’s secure, patient-centered, point-of-care information system (PSI System).

The goal of this alliance is to improve electronic prescribing services and protect the rights and confidentiality of all patients and providers in order to create a safer, more effective and more affordable health care system. PSI and RxHub will facilitate the combined adoption of the RxHub System and PSI System.

RxHub is a health care technology company that has developed a nationwide electronic information exchange that enables standardized communication throughout the prescription writing and delivery process. Because of the open architecture design of its system, RxHub is able to connect prescribers, pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers in order to permit the sharing of prescription and benefit information between them. RxHub recently announced the successful completion of phase one of its pilot program connecting physicians’ offices and clinics with pharmacy benefit information available from the three leading pharmacy benefit managers. With future releases, RxHub will extend the inter-connectivity of its electronic information exchange to include all the participants of the prescribing process, including the patient’s chosen pharmacy.

“We have admired PSI’s commitment to improving the quality of health care through patient empowerment and a strengthened patient-provider relationship,” said RxHub CEO Jim Bradley. “RxHub focuses on the routing of pharmacy benefit and prescription information to all parties involved in the process. The Patient Safety Institute’s efforts are designed to achieve a meaningful improvement in treatment adherence, safety and cost effectiveness. We look forward to working with PSI to create a safer, more efficient, effective and affordable system of care.”

PSI is dedicated to providing confidential, real-time access to clinical information important to patients, hospitals and physicians at the point-of-care. Under a collaborative governance model, patient, physician and hospital leaders have come together to harness the power of emerging technology for the improvement of health care quality and the reduction of health care costs.

“Patient-centric data from RxHub’s electronic prescribing information exchange can be a valuable source of information for physicians as they treat their patients,” said Jack Lewin, MD, CEO of the California Medical Association and chair of PSI’s Board of Directors. “PSI’s vision is to provide physicians, both in the hospital and in their private practices, with a means to access the critical patient information needed to safely and effectively treat their patients, while protecting patient privacy.”
